Environment: Wildfires

Japanese helicopters have been dispatched to assist Indonesia in battling widespread wildfires that have scorched thousands of hectares across Sumatra and Borneo over the weekend. The operation, launched on Sunday, involves six AgustaWestland AW139s equipped with water‑dropping systems, and is expected to support local firefighting teams until the fires are contained. Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment reports that the blaze has already destroyed over 40,000 hectares of forest and threatens several protected areas, including the Tesso Nilo national park.

Meanwhile, a United Nations study warns that recent heatwaves and the accompanying wildfires are reversing gains in air quality worldwide. The report, released in late September, cites a 12% rise in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels in 15 major cities, attributing the spike to increased emissions from forest fires and stagnant atmospheric conditions. The findings underscore the urgent need for coordinated fire‑management and climate‑adaptation strategies to safeguard public health and ecosystem resilience.
